Training Tips

TIPS for TEACHING

1. To calm your dog, be calm in your voice and movements.
2. Reward behaviors you like when the dog does them.
3. Always be consistent to get the behavior you want when you ask.
4. Negate behaviors you don’t want, redirect for behaviors you want, & reinforce good behaviors you get.
5. Consequences are a part of nature, punishment is an emotional response many times unfair.
6. Present a clear picture for the dog, dogs read body language.  Mixed body language signals confuse.
7. You are teaching your dog English, this may require from 25 to 50 repetitions of a cue or signal before he fully understands what you are asking.
8. Dogs have learning curves.  You may have to backtrack at times to help your dog be successful.  Remember to move forward as soon as the dog gets back on track.
9. Keep your dog’s attention by keeping things interesting and challenging.
10. Most importantly,  HAVE FUN with your dog!
