Class Descriptions
Puppy Primer For puppies 8 – 12 weeks old. The starter kit for a new puppy in your life. Introducing the newly arrived member of the household to gentle but clear guidelines for life with their new human family; teaching people how to communicate with their puppies with clarity and consistency; building a great relationship with a solid foundation of trust and fairness. Socialization with other puppies and people, handling and touch desensitization, guidelines for successful potty training, the importance of proper play protocols, the right toys, development time-lines and simple but important basic training are covered in this foundation class.
Puppy Basics For puppies 3 to 5 months old. Focus on valuable basic obedience and social skills (manners & behavior). Owners learn how to educate their pups through the typical puppy development challenges that all ‘parents’ experience – chewing, potty training, handling, leash familiarization, jumping, proper play protocol, biting or nipping, management, etc. Attention exercises, coming when called and impulse control are an important part of the curriculum. Puppy recess helps pups and their people learn about canine communication skills.
Puppy Level 2 For puppies 4-6 months old. Continue with more challenging basic obedience and social skills (manners & behavior). Work with more distractions and duration and keeping play a big part of training while maintaining control of the games. Focus on walking with the leash loose, reliable recalls, self-control, polite greeting, etc. Must have completed Puppy Basics to enroll in this class.
AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Test Socialization, Training, Activity, Responsible owner. For puppies under one year of age. This is a “pre-CGC” test designed specifically for puppies. Activities and elements of the AKC Canine Good Citizen test are introduced and evaluated at a more relaxed level with the young puppy’s age and development taken in consideration.
Basic Manners Manners and basic skills for a happy home life for the dogs 6 months and older. A great opportunity for a tune-up and for dogs offering new or renewed behavior challenges.
Beyond Basics Working for reliability & control when faced with harder distractions. Completion of basic foundation training required. Check with instructor.
Canine Good Citizen Prep Class & Test Focus on AKC Canine Good Citizen test requirements. CGC test on last day of class. Dogs must know sit, down, wait or stay to enroll in class. Participation in the CGC prep class is not required to take the CGC test, however a small fee will be charged to take the test for those not enrolled in the class.
Small Breed Basics and Beyond Basics Just for the ‘little’ guys! Basic manners and survival skills for dogs 15 pounds and under.
Focus on FUN-damentals More than tricks – teaching foundation for useful tasks, ‘chores’, competition, service and entertainment!
Rally Obedience Learn the exercises for Rally obedience competition - Novice, Advanced, Excellent. A fun introduction to AKC obedience.
Challenging Canine For the dog that has “space issues” with dogs or people. Dogs that are more tense or reactive with new or unfamiliar situations. This class is designed to give your reactive dog a safe, controlled environment where (s)he can learn the coping skills needed to become more responsive to you and more relaxed in previously challenging situations. You will learn the tools to help your dog be more successful in these situations. Must have evaluation prior to enrolling in the Challenging Canine class.
